Dugong Beach Resort, Northern Territory

This sparkling new (officially opened mid-May 2008) tropical resort on Groote Eylandt offers a Top End holiday tasting plate, presenting the attractions of sportfishing, golf and serious food along with the privilege of experiencing cultural tours to the bush and the beach with some of the island’s traditional landowners, the Warnindilyakwa people.

Commissioned by the local indigenous land council and built by the developer of the Darwin Airport Resort, the casual but smart property is set on the north-west coast of the island, near the town of Alyangula, which was created by BHP’s Gemco in the 1960s to service its still-operating manganese mine. Two rows of 26 bungalows and one of 34 suites are strung throughout an exotic landscape of rocks, cycads and slender eucalypts, with the seemingly painted-on backdrop of intensely blue sea.

The attractive, spacious bungalows feature calm wood and white interiors, with large ensuites, airconditioning and fans. Boardwalks and decks ensure nature’s gorgeous greens and blues are on view everywhere, from the landscaped pool to the impressive Seagrass Restaurant, where the high-style à la carte dinner menu suggests the barramundi you landed that morning may be served with a tiger prawn boudin and saffron-lemongrass sauce that evening.

Half-day fishing charters are available with the adjoining ET Escape Sportfishing and Wilderness Lodge and the golf course is a two-minute drive away. But the most amazing excursions are with the new indigenous-owned and operated Amuwarngka Cultural Tours. Switch off city time and go along with Ida Mamarika (who was born in the bush) or one of her guides to a rock art gallery where you’ll see the ochre outlines of sea creatures and a Macassan canoe painted by saltwater ancestors. You’ll hear ancient stories of the country and its creation, where birds, animals and geographical sites play spiritual roles. Today’s Warnindilyakwa people still tell their children these stories and when they go fishing, they still ask the crows and the parrots if it’s OK.

An outing might involve beach spearfishing or Mamarika and a few members of her family collecting “longbums” (conical shells) from the mangroves, effortlessly creating a fire from branches and casuarina needles and cooking the shellfish for a rich, mussel-like snack. Mamarika and co provide a glimpse of who our country’s original inhabitants were, how they lived, the layers of interaction they had with their land, and how different their complex society was – and is – from that of non-indigenous people. There’s also a cultural centre within the resort where you can purchase indigenous artworks featuring the distinctive black of the island’s manganese. As well as conference facilities, there’s Next G mobile coverage for those who can’t do without.

Nasties in the water preclude swimming at this ocean-side resort, but fish are plentiful in Arnhem Land during the run-off, when receding floodwaters force bait fish off the flood plains and into the river systems. Groote Eylandt is also renowned for its bluewater fishing. Boat tours can be organised via the resort or neighbouring ET Escape Sportsfishing Lodge. Satisfy cultural pangs with an Amuwarngka Cultural Tour. During the wet season, indigenous-run, half-day bush tucker tours are available through the resort.

Groote Eylandt and Dugong Beach Resort Holiday Destination

It’s one of those places that pilots should visit, just because they can! If you’re up in the Top End, do yourself a favour and sneak across the pond for a night on the understated Groote Eylandt.

Although tourism has only recently been encouraged here by the Aboriginal Land Council, we’ve ensured the island is quite civilized and, as usual, we won’t be landing you in a place without a decent wine list, internet coverage and those blissfully slidey hotel sheets.

Lying just 50nm off the western shore of the Gulf of Carpenteria, Groote was originally discovered and named by the Dutch (its name means “Big Island”) and its ownership has now returned to the resident Anindilyakwa people.

It’s the largest island in the Gulf (about 50km x 60km), a high achiever in the world of manganese mining and its population is therefore mostly miners – a cheerily filthy and bloody thirsty lot.

The airstrip, at nearly 2kms long, will give none of you any stress; aerodrome operator Groote Eylandt Mining Co has catered for much heavier and faster hardware than ours dropping in. ERSA has all the details you’ll need to operate safely in and out of here.
Away from the bustling shipping port of Alyangula, where the loot is loaded onto massive ships from impossibly big road trains hurtling back and forth along adjacent roadways, Groote hides some beautiful untouched beaches and bays along its shores, particularly vista just made for pilots, like the stunning archipelago up on the north coast, around Northwest Bay and inside of Chasm Island.

Dugong Beach Resort

As a group of 13, we found welcome respite from world at the brand new Dugong Beach Resort. As I said, Groote hasn’t made it onto the list of hot tourism destinations yet, so you’ll not be greeted with an overflowing choice of accommodation options. None of that matters though because you’ll be happy at the Dugong.
Brand new and superb, the Dugong Beach Resort offers sophisticated luxury accommodation right on the beach, about half an hour’s drive from the airport. Transfers are easily arranged with the resort.

You’ll pay a bit more (remote never means cheap) but you won’t be thinking about that as you soak off the steam in the tropical outdoor pool, and are treated to a complimentary spectacular sunset that evening on the deck. There’s a great indoor/outdoor restaurant and bar for all meals and the staff will gladly help you with internet access and island tours. There are plenty of reasons to spend a few days up here, not the least of which is to put your feet up in an enviable tropical setting; and then there’s the outstanding sport-fishing. The stars of the show up here are the big fellas, so if you’re into fishing, brace yourself (literally) for a date with some very agitated locals like Marlin, Sailfish, Bluefin tuna, Spanish Mackerel and Giant Trevally. So if you can swap the headset for a road and tackle, then I’d strongly encourage a workout on the back of an offshore fishing boat.

From here up to the Gove Peninsula, and all around the Gulf coast actually, you’re in God’s own country. Purpose built, ET’s Escape Sportsfishing Lodge, right next door to the Resort, caters well for big or small groups of angelers. Have a look at their website for accommodation and charter options.
